Gree R32 mini-splits: efficiency, envelope, and room area
The six single-zone R32 families and the two multi-zone ones, why SEER2 does not predict the operating envelope, and where the A2L minimum room area starts to apply.

Gree Comfort sells R32 in six single-zone families and two multi-zone ones, and the published figures move on two ladders that do not track each other. Zeno and Livo cool to 0 degrees Fahrenheit and heat to minus 13. Envo, Vireo, and Sapphire reach minus 20 and minus 22. The SEER2 number does not tell you which of those two envelopes you are buying.

Every figure here is the upper published value for a Gree Comfort North American family, not a certified rating for one matched pairing. A rating belongs to a specific indoor and outdoor combination, and an operating range belongs to the model on the plate. Both change between regions and between revisions of a range.

Two ladders, not one
Ranked by the top SEER2 figure, the six single-zone R32 families read as a price ladder, rising from Zeno through Livo, then Envo and Vireo together, to Sapphire at the top. Ranked by operating range they do not form a ladder at all. They form two groups.
Zeno and Livo share one envelope: cooling from 0 degrees Fahrenheit to 118, heating from minus 13 to 75. Envo, Vireo, and Sapphire share another: cooling from minus 20 to 122, heating from minus 22 to 86. Nothing sits between the two. The step is 9 degrees at the cold end of the heating range and 20 degrees at the cold end of the cooling range.
That step answers a design-temperature question, not an energy-bill one. A buyer moving up from Livo to Vireo for the efficiency crosses it, and a buyer stepping down to Zeno to save money gives it up. Both changes arrive in the same line of the quotation, and only one of them is what the buyer was shopping for.
What a multi-zone outdoor unit costs on both ladders
One outdoor unit feeding up to five heads is the reason to choose multi-zone, and Gree's R32 multi-zone figures show the price. Multi R32 publishes up to 21.0 SEER2 with heating from minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit to 75. Multi ECO R32 publishes up to 17.0 SEER2 with heating from 5 degrees to 75.
Set against the single-zone families, Multi R32 keeps the cold-end heating figure of the wide-envelope group but sits below all three of them on efficiency. Multi ECO gives up both: its heating range stops 27 degrees above the Multi R32 figure and 18 degrees above the Livo one.
A house that needs a 30.0 SEER2 figure and heating below minus 20 cannot get both from one Gree R32 outdoor unit, because the ranges publishing 26.0 and 30.0 are single-zone ranges. That is settled at design stage, and it is expensive to revisit once line sets are in the walls.
Where the A2L room-area rule starts, and where it does not
R32 is classified A2L, mildly flammable, under ISO 817 and ANSI/ASHRAE 34, and Gree's service manuals carry the consequence as a table of minimum room area against refrigerant charge. The table does not start at zero. At or below 1.836 kilograms of charge it lists no minimum at all.
That threshold decides which half of the R32 range the rule reaches. Livo R32 outdoor units carry factory charges of 18.7 ounces at 9K, 17.6 at 12K, 30.7 or 32.5 at 18K, and 35.3 or 42.3 at 24K. The largest of those is 1.20 kilograms, under the point where the table begins, so a single-zone Livo on a standard pipe run has no minimum room area to satisfy.
Multi R32 crosses it. Factory charges run from 31.8 ounces on the MUL18 outdoor unit to 112.88 ounces, or 3.20 kilograms, on the MUL60. The MUL30 at 77.616 ounces is the first in that series to exceed 1.836 kilograms, and every larger unit exceeds it as well.
The unit systems are a trap on their own. Gree prints the charge in ounces in the specification tables and the room-area table in kilograms and square metres, inside the same North American manual, and does the arithmetic nowhere. The conversion worth memorising is that 1.836 kilograms is 64.8 ounces.
Mounting height moves the answer further than charge does
The table has a second axis: the height at which refrigerant would enter the room. The Livo R32 manual gives four columns for it, running from 0.6 metres to 2.5 metres. Hold the charge at 1.85 kilograms, and the minimum floor area is 29.39 square metres for the lowest column and 6.72 square metres for the next one up. In square feet that is 316 against 72, for the same quantity of refrigerant.
At the far end of the same table, 3.5 kilograms, the two columns read 105.20 and 12.71 square metres, or 1,132 square feet against 137. Raising the height does more for the permitted room size than any charge reduction available inside the range.
The mechanism is dispersion. Refrigerant entering a room near the floor mixes through a shallow layer, so a small room reaches a flammable concentration on less of it, while the same quantity entering higher passes through more volume first. That is why a floor-standing console and a high wall head holding identical charges are not the same installation question.
The two manuals label the axis differently. Livo R32 heads the column "Height of ventilation opening", and Multi R32 heads the equivalent column "Installation height" and runs it 1.8, 2.2, 2.5, and 3 metres instead. Read the heading in the manual for the model actually supplied rather than carrying a remembered number between them.
What the comparison figures settle
Gree states that R32 provides up to 13 percent more capacity and 5 percent greater efficiency than other refrigerants, and on the multi-zone range page puts its global warming potential 68 percent below R-410A. The first two claims name no comparison equipment, which limits how far they travel.
The global warming potential comparison is a property of the fluid and holds outside any one product. Capacity and efficiency are not: they describe what a system engineered around R32 can do, not what a given Gree model does against a given R-410A model. For a purchase, the certified figure for the exact indoor and outdoor pairing is the one that can be checked.
None of it makes R32 a drop-in. Operating pressures, component ratings, lubricant, and safety classification all differ, and Gree publishes the R32 equipment as its own ranges with their own model numbers rather than as a conversion for installed systems.

One room, one head, and a quotation offering a choice of families at different prices.
Settle the winter design temperature before the efficiency target, because it decides which of the two envelopes you need, then choose inside that group. The Livo R32 charges published for 9K to 24K stay below the point where the room-area table begins.
You are specifying a multi-zone system
One outdoor unit feeding several heads, with at least one small room on the list.
Take the outdoor unit factory charge and the addition for the pipe runs, convert to kilograms, and read the table against the smallest room a head will serve. Gree publishes one figure for the system rather than an allocation per head, so treating the smallest room as the binding one is the cautious reading, and the installer determination under local code is what governs.
You are replacing an installed R-410A Gree system
Line sets already in the walls, and an outdoor unit that has failed or is near the end of its service life.
Treat it as a new system rather than a swap. Head, line set, and outdoor unit are matched as a set, and whether existing pipework can be reused is a decision for the installer against Gree's instructions for the replacement model. The specification of the old system does not settle it.
Safe homeowner checks
- Write down the model number and the ounces of factory charge shown on the outdoor unit plate, since both feed the room-area lookup.
- Measure the floor area of every room that will take an indoor head, and note the height each head would sit at.
- Ask for the installed charge in writing, since pipe runs past the standard length add to the factory figure.
- Ask which document the installer reads the minimum room area from, and check that it names your model.
When to call a technician
- The minimum room area determination belongs to the installer, who has to satisfy ANSI/ASHRAE 15 and the local mechanical code alongside the manufacturer table.
- Refrigerant work on an A2L system needs EPA Section 608 certification in the United States and the F-gas regime in the United Kingdom.
- Leave service ports, valve caps, and panels closed when checking a charge figure; the data plate carries what an owner needs.

Which Gree R32 family heats to the lowest temperature?
Envo, Vireo, and Sapphire R32 share a published heating range down to minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit, and Multi R32 carries the same cold-end figure for multi-zone. Zeno and Livo stop at minus 13, and Multi ECO R32 stops at 5 degrees.
Does a higher SEER2 Gree R32 unit also run colder?
Not as a rule. Livo publishes 20.5 SEER2 and Zeno 19.0, and both share the same minus 13 degree heating limit. The envelope changes between groups of families rather than in step with the efficiency figure, so the two have to be checked separately.
Do Gree R32 single-zone systems need a minimum room size?
The table in the Livo R32 service manual lists no minimum at or below 1.836 kilograms of charge, and the published factory charges for the 9K to 24K Livo outdoor units reach 42.3 ounces, which is 1.20 kilograms.
