Refrigerant charge: how it works

Manufacturers pre-charge the outdoor unit for a stated line length and publish an amount to add per unit of length beyond it. Charge is a mass rather than a pressure, because pressure changes with temperature and load while the amount of refrigatant in the circuit does not. Getting it wrong in either direction changes how the coils behave: too little starves the evaporator, too much backs liquid up in the condenser.

How do I know if my system is low on refrigerant?

From the outside you cannot, and the symptoms overlap with airflow problems. A technician establishes it by measuring, and a genuinely low charge means a leak that also needs finding.

Why does pipe length change the charge?

A longer line set holds more refrigerant, so the pre-charged amount is no longer enough to fill the circuit correctly. Manufacturers publish an addition per unit of length beyond the pre-charged run.

Is an overcharged system worse than an undercharged one?

Both reduce capacity by different mechanisms. Overcharge raises head pressure and can flood the compressor with liquid on shutdown; undercharge starves the evaporator and can freeze it. Neither is acceptable.
