SEER2 averages performance across a season of load conditions, the greater number of which sit below design. A compressor that can drop to 30 percent of capacity, as Carrier describes the 26VNA1 doing, spends those conditions running slowly against a heat exchanger sized for full output, and that is where a variable-speed machine earns its number.

The same modulation is what a full-load reading cannot reward. A climate whose cooling season sits under design condition for long stretches is described by SEER2. The hours are part-load hours, the equipment modulates through them, and the seasonal figure is the honest summary.

A climate where the cooling load sits at or near design for weeks at a time is described better by EER2. Those are the hours that dominate both the bill and the comfort question, and in Carrier's range they are the hours where the 16.5 SEER2 units lead.

The humidity question sits underneath both and is not in either number. A variable-speed compressor holding a long low-output run removes more moisture per unit of sensible cooling than a single-stage machine cycling on and off, which is a comfort argument for the 26VNA1 that neither efficiency column captures.

Where the two 16.5 units separate

The 26SPA6 and the 26SCA5 publish the same 16.5 SEER2 and the same 14.5 EER2, and both are single-stage. On efficiency they are one product with two names.
