An inverter compressor varies its speed to match demand instead of switching fully on and off. It holds room temperature more steadily and uses less energy at part load than a fixed-speed compressor.
Inverter compressor: how it works
A fixed-speed compressor runs flat out or not at all, so it overshoots and then stops. An inverter drive varies the frequency supplied to the motor, letting the compressor settle at whatever output the room currently needs. Running continuously at low output means smaller temperature swings, fewer starts, and less energy for the same comfort, at the cost of more power electronics that can themselves report faults.

- In a complaint that the unit never switches off, which is what continuous modulation looks like from the room.
- In a code table, where drive and module protection codes exist that a fixed-speed system does not have.
- In a sizing discussion, where a modulating system tolerates a degree of oversizing that a fixed-speed one does not.
How to check it
- Listen for output changing rather than stopping. A rising and falling note from the outdoor unit is modulation. A hard stop and restart every few minutes is not what an inverter system is meant to do. Owner check
- Read the code against the inverter section of the manual. Drive, module, and position sensing codes belong to the inverter stage rather than to the compressor mechanically. Technician
Inverter compressor: what it is not
- A unit that runs continuously is not necessarily faulty. Continuous low-output running is what an inverter system is designed to do.
- An inverter code is not automatically a compressor code. The drive electronics and the compressor are separate components with separate failures.

Does an inverter system ever switch off completely?
It reduces output rather than stopping once the room is close to the set point, and manufacturers describe that behaviour directly. A unit that appears never to switch off is doing what it was designed to do.
Why is an inverter system more efficient?
Starting a compressor costs a surge of energy, and running at full output when the room needs a quarter of it wastes the rest. Modulating to the actual demand avoids both, which is where the part-load saving comes from.
Are inverter systems more expensive to repair?
They contain power electronics a fixed-speed system does not, so there are more components that can fail and boards are a significant part cost. Set against that, fewer starts reduce mechanical wear on the compressor.
