Reading a Carrier R-454B model number: 26, 27, and the letters
The Puron Advance range renumbered every Carrier air conditioner and heat pump. What each position means, and why two units badged 16 publish the same efficiency.

On the Puron Advance range a 26 prefix is an air conditioner and a 27 is a heat pump, replacing the 24 and 25 prefixes Carrier used on R-410A equipment. The third character is the compressor: V for variable speed, T for two-stage, S for single-stage. The fourth is the tier: N for Infinity, P for Performance, C for Comfort.

The first two digits changed with the refrigerant
Carrier's R-410A variable-speed pair was the 24VNA6 air conditioner and the 25VNA4 heat pump, numbered together in one service manual. The Puron Advance range that replaced them uses 26 for air conditioners and 27 for heat pumps, and the whole current catalogue follows it: five air conditioners numbered 26, seven heat pumps numbered 27.
That makes the prefix the fastest refrigerant check available without walking to the unit. A 24 or a 25 on a quotation is previous-generation R-410A stock. A 26 or a 27 is Puron Advance, which is Carrier's trade name for R-454B.
Two model families sit outside the pattern. The 37MUHA and 37MURA are the crossover heat pumps, built on a ductless platform rather than a conventional split one, and the 33NM3 is an air-to-water unit for domestic hot water. A number that does not begin 26 or 27 is telling you the equipment is not a conventional split system.
The third character is the compressor, and it is the expensive one
Across the range the third character sorts by how the compressor runs. Carrier's own product pages carry it: the 26VNA1 is variable speed and modulates from 30 to 100 percent, the 26TPA8 is two-stage, the 26SPA6 and the 26SCA5 are single-stage.
This is the position that decides how the system feels rather than what it costs to run. A variable-speed compressor holding a low output for long periods is what produces the humidity control Carrier describes on those pages, and a single-stage compressor cannot produce it at any efficiency rating.
It is also the position most likely to be lost in a conversation. Setting a Performance 18 beside a Performance 16 sets a two-stage machine beside a single-stage one, and the badge numbers describe efficiency instead.
The fourth character is the tier, and the badge number is not
N, P, and C run Infinity, Performance, and Comfort across all twelve conventional models, which makes the letter a more reliable tier reading than the name on a proposal. It also exposes a combination the tier names hide: the 27VPA9 is a variable-speed compressor in a Performance-tier heat pump, so variable speed is not an Infinity-only feature on the heat pump side.
The badge number is where the reading breaks down. The 26SPA6 is the Performance 16 and the 26SCA5 is the Comfort 16, and Carrier publishes the same efficiency for both: up to 16.5 SEER2 and up to 14.5 EER2. Two tiers, one pair of numbers.
What separates them is published elsewhere on the same pages. The Performance unit is 67 decibels at its quietest and the Comfort unit is 71. Four decibels is the entire measurable difference between those two model numbers, alongside the feature set, and no efficiency figure will show it.
What the last digit does not tell you
On the heat pumps the final digit tracks the badge closely: 27VNA3 is the Infinity 23, 27VNA1 is the Infinity 21, 27VNA0 the Infinity 20, 27VPA9 the Performance 19, 27TPA8 the Performance 18. It reads like a rule until the Comfort models arrive, where 27SCA5 and 26SCA5 are both badged 16.
Treat the last digit as a series index that is close to the badge rather than as the efficiency figure. The efficiency figure that matters belongs to a matched pairing of outdoor unit, indoor coil, and air handler or furnace, not to the outdoor model number on its own.
A trailing C after the model number is the coastal cabinet. Carrier lists 26TPA8, 26SCA5, 27TPA8, and 27SCA5 in coastal variants, which is a corrosion package rather than a performance one.

What replaced the Carrier 24VNA6?
The variable-speed air conditioner position in the current range is the 26VNA1, badged Infinity 21 and published at up to 21 SEER2. It is not a like-for-like successor: the 24VNA6 was an R-410A machine and the 26VNA1 runs Puron Advance, so the indoor side changes with it.
Is a Carrier Performance heat pump ever variable speed?
Yes. The 27VPA9 is the Performance 19 and Carrier publishes it as a variable-speed heat pump at up to 19 SEER2 and 10 HSPF2. The V in the third position is what identifies it, and the tier letter P sits after it.
Does a higher badge number always mean a better unit?
Not between tiers. The Performance 16 and the Comfort 16 publish the same 16.5 SEER2 and 14.5 EER2 and differ by four decibels at their quietest. Within one tier the badge does track efficiency, which is why the comparison has to be made inside a tier to mean anything.
What is Puron Advance on a Carrier quotation?
