Start from what you need. For general dust and equipment protection, MERV 8 is enough. For allergies, pets, or a smoky region, MERV 11 or 13 is the target. Then check what the system can take: if the filter slot is one inch, favour MERV 11 unless the equipment documentation approves a one-inch 13, and if you want MERV 13, plan for a four-inch filter cabinet.
The way to confirm a filter is not starving the system is a static pressure reading. A technician measures the pressure drop across the filter and the total external static pressure against the blower's rating. If a new higher-MERV filter pushes the total past the limit, the answer is more filter area, not a lower-MERV compromise that leaves the household unprotected. Whatever the rating, fit it with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace or air handler and change it on schedule, since a loaded filter of any MERV resists airflow far more than a clean one.
