Choosing a higher MERV filter without starving the blower

Whether a higher-rated filter suits a system is decided by filter area and dirty pressure drop against the equipment's published static pressure limit, not by the rating alone.

The static pressure figures quoted here belong to the equipment families their manufacturers published them for, and a ceiling from one furnace is not a specification for another. Filter guidance in this article is written for ducted systems with a filter in the return path. Ductless indoor units use a washable mesh screen with no equivalent rating or cabinet, and none of the sizing reasoning below applies to one.

The number the equipment publishes, and the number the filter publishes

Two figures have to be compared, and neither is a MERV rating. The first belongs to the equipment. Lennox states it for the modulating furnace family in its service literature. External static pressure drop must not be more than 0.8 inches water column in the heating mode, and must not exceed 1.0 inches in the cooling mode, with the blower running and the coil dry.

The second belongs to the filter, and it is a resistance at a stated airflow rather than a single value. Lennox names the comparison explicitly, telling the installer to check the specifications provided by the filter manufacturer against the data given in the appropriate Lennox product bulletin before using any filter with the system.

That instruction is the whole method. It is not a rule of thumb, it does not need a rating table, and it works for any filter anyone wants to fit, including one nobody has written a blog post about.

Size it for the filter at the end of its life

Rheem's air handler literature makes the timing explicit. As filters near the end of their useful life the pressure drop through them increases. The manual therefore instructs the installer to factor that end-of-life dirty pressure drop into the external static pressure of the duct system when selecting blower speeds and designing ductwork.

Choosing on the clean figure is how a system passes commissioning in March and struggles in July. The measurement was taken on the day the filter was newest, and the same filter three months later is a different component in the same slot.

The same manual states the consequence of getting it wrong in component terms rather than comfort terms: reduced airflow can shorten the life of the compressor, the indoor coil, heater elements, over-temperature limits, and relays. Lennox lists the symptoms that reach the householder first, saying a pressure drop that is too great can reduce capacity, raise the number of winter limit trips, and freeze the indoor coil in summer. Goodman puts the heating half plainly, warning that too much external static pressure produces insufficient air and excessive temperature rise, which can cause limit switch tripping and heat exchanger failure.

Area is the variable you can change

A denser medium in the same opening costs more pressure. A denser medium in a larger opening need not, because the same air is spread across more of it. That is why the equipment manufacturers publish filter dimensions rather than filter ratings, and why the largest cabinet in a range sometimes needs two filters rather than a bigger one.

Lennox prints exactly that. Its filter size table lists one 16 by 25 by 1 filter for the narrowest cabinet on a side return, and two of them for the widest, with a single 24 by 25 by 1 filter given as the bottom-return alternative. Goodman publishes an equivalent minimum recommended filter size against each model in its own installation instructions, given separately for a side return and a bottom return.

Read as a sizing rule rather than a parts list, those tables say the same thing. If a filter rated higher than the one fitted is wanted, the way to afford it is to enlarge the filter, not to accept the loss.

The mistake that undoes a correct choice

Rheem states it as an instruction in bold terms: do not install a return air filter grille and a filter rack at the unit, and do not install a filter in the supply duct system. Two filters in series are two pressure drops in series, and the second one is invisible to whoever is standing at the first.

This is worth checking before anyone concludes a rating was too ambitious. A house with a filter grille in the hallway ceiling and a second filter someone slipped into the rack at the air handler is running a stack that no sizing table accounted for. Removing the redundant one restores airflow without touching the rating on either.

Goodman adds a boundary in the other direction. Filters must be used with the furnace, they must comply with UL 900 or CAN/ULC S111, and damage or repairs from installing the furnace without filters are not covered by its warranty. Pulling the filter to fix an airflow complaint is not a fix and is not free.

What a measurement actually looks like

Goodman supplies a worked example that makes the arithmetic concrete. With clean filters in place, a reading is taken in the return duct at the inlet of the furnace, which is negative, and a second in the supply duct, which is positive. Its example gives a return reading of minus 0.1 inches water column and a supply reading of 0.3 inches, and the difference between the two numbers, 0.4 inches, is the total external static pressure on that system.

Put that beside the Lennox ceiling and the decision stops being a matter of opinion. A system reading 0.4 inches with a clean standard filter has room to spend. A system already close to its own published limit does not, and adding resistance there is spending capacity the equipment needed.

Both readings are taken with a manometer through test holes in the plenums, on equipment that is running, and Goodman describes the procedure as a check for a qualified service technician. It is a commissioning measurement rather than an owner one, and it is the measurement worth asking for when a filter upgrade is being discussed.

Questions people ask about this

Will a MERV 13 filter damage my furnace?

The rating alone does not answer it. Lennox tells the installer to check the filter manufacturer's specification against the equipment data before fitting a high-efficiency filter. Rheem says not to fit one unless there is enough filter area to bring the pressure drop to an acceptable level. The same rating in a larger filter is a different proposition.

Is a 4 inch filter better than a 1 inch one?

A deeper filter holds more medium in the same face opening, which is one way of buying capture without buying the same resistance. The comparison that decides it is still the filter manufacturer's published resistance against the equipment's static pressure limit.

Can I run my system with no filter at all?

Why does my new filter make the system louder?
