  1. Clean the indoor filters. Remove, clean, and dry the owner-serviceable filters following the instruction in your operation manual. Heating season is when the indoor unit runs longest, and a restricted filter reduces delivered heat and stresses the coil.
  2. Clear the space around the outdoor unit. Remove leaves, cuttings, stored items, and anything leaning against the cabinet. Cut back vegetation to the clearances in your installation manual rather than to what looks tidy.
  3. Clear the space beneath it. Defrost meltwater has to get away from the base. Clear debris and standing material from under a wall-mounted unit and from around the feet of a ground-mounted one, so water drains instead of freezing into a mound.
  4. Look up. Check what is above the unit. Water dripping from a gutter, a valley, or an unguttered roof edge refreezes on the coil faster than a defrost cycle can clear it, and ice fed that way keeps coming back after every cycle.
  5. Test heating early. Run the system in heating for a full cycle on a cool day, well before you depend on it. Confirm warm supply air, note any code, and give yourself weeks rather than hours to get a fault attended to.
  6. Watch one defrost. During that test, or on the first cold damp day, watch a full defrost cycle so you know what your own system looks like doing it. Recognising normal in October saves a January call-out.

Why covering it is the wrong instinct

Winter covers come from the world of cooling-only condensers that sit unused from October to April. A heat pump is not unused in winter. It is working hardest then, and it works by moving large volumes of outdoor air across the coil.

A cover restricts that airflow, and it holds defrost meltwater against the coil and the base instead of letting it drain and evaporate. Trapped moisture in freezing conditions is how ice accumulates in the places a defrost cycle cannot reach.

Manufacturer-supplied wind baffles, snow hoods, and stands are a different matter. They are designed for the specific cabinet, they preserve airflow, and they are fitted as part of the installation rather than draped over it in autumn.

For a system that will heat, the supply stays on. Some outdoor units warm the compressor during standby to keep refrigerant from migrating into the oil, and cutting power removes that protection.
