A thermostat measures room temperature and calls for heating or cooling. What it can actually control is set by the conductors run to it, which is why wiring decides compatibility.
Thermostat: how it works
The thermostat closes circuits between terminals to call for a function: cooling, heating, fan, second stage, or reversing valve position. Each function needs a conductor, so a replacement can only do what the existing cable supports. On a heat pump, the reversing valve terminal and the auxiliary heat staging are what make its wiring different from a furnace and air conditioner pair.

How to check it

Thermostat: what it is not
- Wire colour is not a standard. Terminal letters are what matter, and installers do not always follow the colour convention.
- A thermostat measures its own location. Where it sits changes the behaviour of the whole system.
- Setting a higher temperature does not make a system heat faster. It only changes when the call stops.

Does a thermostat control a mini-split?
Ductless systems are controlled by their own handheld or wall controller rather than by a conventional thermostat. Interfaces exist to bridge them, and they are model specific.
Where should a thermostat be installed?
On an interior wall away from direct sun, draughts, doorways, and heat-producing appliances, at a height that represents the occupied part of the room.
