Expansion vessel

A sealed steel container, part air and part water, that gives heated water somewhere to expand into so the pressure in a closed heating system does not climb to the relief-valve setting every time the boiler fires. A rubber diaphragm separates the water from a nitrogen or air charge behind it.

The expansion vessel is a sealed part-air, part-water container that absorbs the volume increase of heated water so a closed heating system holds a steady pressure instead of rising toward the relief valve.

Expansion vessel: how it works

Water expands by a small percentage as it heats from a cold fill to operating temperature. In a sealed system that extra volume has nowhere to go, so it pushes against the gas charge behind the vessel diaphragm, which compresses and holds the rise to a modest amount. If the gas charge leaks away, the diaphragm sits hard against the shell, the water has nothing to compress, and the gauge swings a long way between cold and hot, often lifting the pressure relief valve.

How to check it

  1. Watch the gauge through a full heat-up. Note the cold reading, then watch it as the boiler runs. A steady small rise is normal; a fast climb toward the red band points at the vessel or a closed filling loop. Owner check

Expansion vessel: what it is not

  • A rising gauge is not always a broken vessel. Filling-loop valves left open feed mains pressure in and produce the same climb.
  • Topping the system up over and over does not fix a flat vessel. It raises the cold pressure so the hot pressure reaches the relief valve sooner.

Why does my boiler pressure rise when the heating comes on?

Heated water expands, and the expansion vessel is meant to absorb that. A small rise is expected. A large, fast rise points to the vessel having lost its gas charge, or to a filling-loop valve left open.

Can I recharge the expansion vessel myself?

No. The system has to be isolated and dropped to zero pressure first, and the correct air-side figure comes from the boiler manual. Getting it wrong leaves the same fault or overpressures the diaphragm.

How long does an expansion vessel last?

There is no fixed life. The gas charge can hold for many years or leak within a few, so the check is the air-side pressure reading rather than the age of the part.
